Fireworks Safety Guidelines

Fireworks are a wonderful part of our celebrations โ€” and they deserve respect. Please read these guidelines with your family before you light your first cracker this season.

What You Should Do

  • Buy fireworks only from licensed and reputed dealers.
  • Read the instructions printed on every packet before use.
  • Burst crackers only in open outdoor spaces, away from buildings and vehicles.
  • Keep two buckets of water and a bag of sand within easy reach.
  • Light one cracker at a time and step back immediately to a safe distance.
  • Use a long agarbatti or a candle fixed to the ground to light crackers.
  • Wear cotton clothes โ€” they are far safer than synthetic fabrics.
  • Keep a first aid box handy and know the nearest hospital route.
  • Soak all used fireworks in water before throwing them away.
  • Supervise children at all times, without exception.

What You Should Never Do

  • Never allow young children to handle fireworks on their own.
  • Never hold a cracker in your hand while lighting it.
  • Never try to relight a cracker that did not go off โ€” wait 15 minutes, then soak it in water.
  • Never store fireworks near a flame, stove, candle or electrical point.
  • Never burst crackers inside a house, on a terrace with a low ceiling or in a narrow lane.
  • Never keep fireworks in your pocket.
  • Never use fireworks near hospitals, schools, petrol pumps or places of worship.
  • Never wear loose or synthetic clothing while bursting crackers.
  • Never experiment by making your own fireworks or combining crackers.
  • Never throw a lit cracker towards another person or an animal.

Safe Storage

Store all fireworks in a cool, dry and well-ventilated place inside a closed cardboard box, well away from any source of heat or flame. Keep the box locked and out of the reach of children. Do not store fireworks in the kitchen, near an electrical panel or in direct sunlight.

In An Emergency

  • In case of a minor burn, hold the affected area under cool running water for at least 10 minutes. Do not apply toothpaste, oil or ointment.
  • If clothing catches fire, do not run โ€” STOP, DROP and ROLL, or smother the flames with a thick blanket.
  • For an eye injury, do not rub the eye. Rinse gently with clean water and get to a hospital immediately.
  • For any serious burn, call 108 for an ambulance and go to the nearest hospital without delay.
Legal reminder: please follow the fireworks timings and noise limits set by your local authority and the Supreme Court of India. Burst crackers only during the permitted hours, and always in an open space.
